Devotional Pieces for Week of April 1

April 1-Sunday-Ps.114 is suggested for Easter evening. I don;t know about how well it fits. It imagines an unnatural response of stable nature to the presence of God. Nothing is as unexpected as life coming from death. Easter needs less candy and more awe at its wonder.

Thursday-Listening is much more than allowing another to talk while waiting for a chance to respond. Listening is paying full attention to others and welcoming them into our very beings. The beauty of listening is that, those who are listened to start feeling accepted, start taking their words more seriously and discovering their own true selves. Listening is a form of spiritual hospitality by which you invite strangers to become friends, to get to know their inner selves more fully, and even to dare to be silent with you.

Friday-I had a professor who often said, “Jesus doesn’t belong in your pocket.” She said this to combat the common practice of making God smaller, more manageable than what God truly is...However, by changing God into a tamer, more manageable portion of Godself, we lose the grandness of God’s love and grace offered to humanity. A Brief Look at Michael Brenner's In Search of Israel


The thesis of this fine book is solid. Tensions were built in to the dream of Israel. Thos e tensions continue  as Israel is in its seventh decade as a nation. Part of the dream was that Israel would be a model state, a light to the nations. Others hoped that it would be granted statehood, so the at Jews could exist in a normal situation as a state just like other states.

At times, the author’s encyclopedic knowledge of the different fissures within the Zionist projects is a bit much for a casual reader. On the other hand, he knows some much about the initial cleavage points in the dream of a place to call home after the years of Diaspora. No, Zionism was not a unified, coherent ideology, but it was more a projection of the hopes of both secular and sacred, of socialist vision and messianic dreams of different adherents.

For instance some dreamt that Israel would b eth eland of a 7 hour work week. Others imagined it to be a multi-ethnic model of a commonwealth. Some saw it as the  start of a messianic age, and others saw it as an impediment toward God’s timetable for a messianic chapter. Some ,merely wanted it to be a nation-state just like any other. The different proposals were wanting a place that could be called a homeland, instead of always being treated and viewed as the other.

The Balfour Declaration was vague on the terms of a land grant to a national home in Palestine, so it could be filled with what was projected on to it. What would its borders be? Would it be a “Jewish state” or not? Some dreamed of alternative homelands not in historical Israel at all. Even a definition of being a Jew met with  varying interpretations. Now  a Diaspora exists as people emigrate from Israel and some  live both in Israel and of all places, Berlin. Israel is s a society riven with some fault lines that will take herculean efforts to stabilize or harmonize, let alone seeking harmony with its neighbors and the post ’67 victory that s transformed it into greater Israel.

Palm Sunday column

Priests and pastors of many long-established Protestant churches go to seminary, a three year professional degree program. Perhaps the most important work one does is to be introduced to methods of careful Bible study. Usually, the fruits of this labor are hidden or watered down when we actually serve in congregations. Basically, one questions the passage with care in trying to garner meaning from it, what is said and perhaps what is not being said. On this Palm Sunday, let’s look a bit at this day through the lens of the four gospel passages (Mk.11:1-10, Mt. 21:1-11, Lk. 19:28-40, and John 12:12- 19). For instance, only John mentions palm branches explicitly.

Meaning derives from context. Jesus was crucified by Rome. Palm Sunday gives a hint of the rationale. John explicitly has Jesus enter Jerusalem to prepare for Passover. The Romans would learn, and quickly, that Passover was redolent with political message, as it was all about freedom from the oppression of Egypt and a march toward freedom. Insurrections had started around Passover time before. Apparently, Rome would station a cohort of 500 troops during religious festivals. Matthew has the entrance of Jesus draw a multitude, but Luke mentions only many disciples, and Mark is silent on the issue. It is possible that Rome took note, if the crowds were large. John Dominic Crossan imagines the Palm Sunday procession as a counter demonstration, similar to the marches for gun control yesterday, as a counter to the military procession of the cohort marching to their fortress, while Jesus heads to the temple. No gospel mentions a disturbance of the public order. This is a telling sign: the followers of Jesus were not crucified, only Jesus on Good Friday.

Usually, John’s gospel has no parallel with the synoptic gospels, synoptic as they seem to share a basically Markan template. With Palm Sunday, we have some coherence, albeit with differences. One point of contact is that reference is made to Zechariah 9:9. I often imagine that the early Christian communities scoured the Scriptures through the lens of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus to try to get a deeper picture of his religious significance. There, a king is portrayed as a conquering her of peace, not military prowess. Remember this is after the temple was destroyed. When the gospels were circulated, the temple had been destroyed by Rome in 70, forty years after the crucifixion.

What may have caught their intention would lead to the sign over the cross itself-King of the Jews (Lk.19:38, Jn.12:13). We do not know how much Rome took into account a religious expectation for an anointed one, a messiah, to have an entrance into a new world. This was indeed an open consideration in the time of Jesus. The Dead Sea Scrolls community expected a priestly messiah who would purify temple activity in Jerusalem, for instance.

It seems possible that the very people who acclaimed Jesus on Palm Sunday were among those who shouted for crucifixion that very week. Crowd responses can be changeable indeed. To me Holy Week reflects life in that movement. Triumph and tragedy can be twins.  We may have a spectacular experience on one day and be in the very depths not long thereafter. Jesus seems carried away with the response and the bringing together of his vision on Palm Sunday (Lk. 19:40) where the very stones would shout. Soon he would be in the garden praying his heart out, as his very soul was troubled at the prospect of impending death (Lk. 42-44). His prayer would fall to the wayside, as so many prayers often do. Sermon Notes Phil 2, Is. 50 for March 25

March 25-Phil.2-Eastmann-When I was younger, I heard people walk up and asked if you were saved. It meant: do you have a ticket to heaven. I prefer Richard Niebuhr’s reply: I was saved;I am being saved, I will be saved. The word for save is often the same word for healing in Scripture.Today we hear of Christ himself taking the form of a slave, to death by crucifixion -- the execution reserved for slaves and traitors in the Roman Empire. Paradoxically, our liberation comes from Christ's bondage, which is his entry into our bondage.  we begin by hearing how Christ became like us, and continues to come among us. equal with God, to being in the form of a slave, in the likeness of human beings, in the appearance of a singular human being, obedient even to the point of death by crucifixion. Having been raised on a cross, Christ is exalted even higher by God, so that all creation will bow down and confess him as Lord.
For this very reason, the story of Christ also moves from separation to solidarity, and from difference to likeness, as Christ moves into the most despairing depths of human experience. In the form of a slave, he mirrors back to us the reality of our own enslavement to sin and death. He comes very near, so near that he "gets under our skin." God becomes one of our kind, kin to us. This is the incarnation, the life-transforming power that animates Paul's ethical teaching: "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure" (2:13) God gives us the desire and the energy to enact Christ's compassion in the world. The "you" is plural, showing that God is among us, having come among us as a slave, as one who serves. This divine companionship - the actual motivating power operating in and through those mutual relationships., the "salvation" we are to work out is not our private, individual destiny, but rather, the quality of our corporate life as it is lived under the rule of the Savior. Paul already has described this quality of life in terms of mutual love and affection, sharing in the Spirit, unity, humility, putting others first -- and all of this "in Christ" (2:1-4). And it is a public life, a public "politics."
(2:12) Incarnation’s path is  the presence of God. This is the language of theophany. God's self-revelation issues in a transformed community,a manifestation of God's presence in the world.
Finally, the drama of salvation enacted by Christ (2:6-11)is a kind of  theater that involves the audience in the action. it is God's action in the flesh, invading our worlds, catching us up into the saving work of God, making us also participants  in the drama (theodrama). No longer mere spectators, we are part of the "spectacle" of God Holy Week incarnate.

Is 50 Tull-. Like that lamenter he walks in darkness, without light, and envisions a stance of trust despite confusion, despite opposition, despite present straits. The prophet teaches this vision to others, beckoning them to endure with hope, and through their endurance to become God’s light to the nation- that the things they have endured have meaning, and that their life has a future.Such a stance is not adopted easily. Ambiguous realities still persist. Throughout faith’s history, many turning points have presented themselves, many ambiguous moments at which decisions have been made to choose sturdy trust.some have trusted God through the midst of terrible darkness..

Week of March 25 Reflections

Sunday-Ps. 31 is one of the possible readings for today.Jesus quotes v. 5 at the cross. For me v. 12 has special poignance as I grow older, and this is often the product of old age. Yet even there, God is with us (v. 16).
Monday-“We have to take a long hard look at ourselves. Why we are so eager to condemn others and somehow think that our own condemnation is exempt. How we are so willing to withhold forgiveness and to what extent that means we ourselves are in desperate need of it. How we are so willing to peripherize reconciliation when it necessitates a resolution with our own demons.”"Dear Working Preacher" for the Fourth Sunday in Lent
Tuesday-John S. Mogabgab-Gratitude is the gesture of a heart opened to receive God How do we remain alert for the signs of God’s entrance into our lives and the life of our time? What can keep us awake in the drowsy atmosphere of habit that cozily blankets our days? According to Paul, the answer is gratitude. To the Colossians he writes, “Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving” (Col. 4:2). Paul is here pointing to the profound relation between spiritual alertness and the act of offering thanks. Gratitude gathers us into that double helix of grace descending and praise ascending that forms the basic design of life with God. Gratitude is the gesture of a heart opened to receive God, a heart acquainted with the shape of things to come, a heart alert to the tremors of a new creation in the birthing.

Thursday-Strangers, people different than we are, stir up fear, discomfort, suspicion, and hostility. They make us lose our sense of security just by being "other." Only when we fully claim that God loves us in an unconditional way and look at "those other persons" as equally loved can we begin to discover that the great variety in being human is an expression of the immense richness of God's heart. Then the need to prejudge people can gradually disappear.

Friday-Paradox-Here is a secret, a beautiful little secret....in every impossibly broken thing there is still an impossibly strong and enduring wholeness. What feels broken apart, might be the place a circumstance, or our spirits break open, expanding and deepening instead of contracting our lives and world. I know this is a paradox, but I read somewhere that paradox is just a truth standing on it's head to get our attention. There are still enduringly strong forces at work. March 18 sermon notes, Jer. 31, Heb. 5, John 12

March 18-We would see Jesus. That was emblazoned on many pulpits over the years.March 18-Jer 31,The heart was a way of speaking of the center of one’s life, not only emotions or sentiment. It is clear to when we say the heart of the matter. It is an inner shift, where we would not need an external discipline; god’s way becomes part of us.It is not being forced to do something, but to wish to do it,
When God will write God’s law upon the hearts of the people, their hearts will embody and empower the true relationship they share with God and one another.  it unites and renews the community as God’s people. In her book, The Body, Lisa Blackman …the body is not bounded by the skin, where we understand the skin to be a kind of container for the self, but rather our bodies always extend and connect to other bodies,.
Heb.5:5 Heen-“Perfection,” in Hebrews, then, was not simply given to Jesus nor is it a “moral” category. Jesus became “perfect” only because he continued to trust in the goodness and mercy of God while suffering the full power and depth of evil. This way of salvation fulfilled by Jesus had, however, been prepared by the Word of God. “... Scripture had revealed that God is the God of life and wellness. The heroes of the faith (Chapter 11) had exhibited elements of a faith that was “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).We do well to maintain our stunning faith cliam :in Jesus Christ we encounter god as a human,with a witness to the vulnerability of the man Jesus, who suffered a difficult life and a painful death. These two elements o (divine/human) set side-by-side, remain in paradoxical tension.. The vulnerability of Jesus “in the days of his flesh” reveals a gracious God. As Hebrews states: “Having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey [or trust] him, We would see Jesus within. In the deep of the self,beyond measurement, beyond fathoming is a potential that emerges at times but often goes unexplored.

John 12:20 Salmon-The seeking Greeks wish to see Jesus.  John makes clear that the body of Jesus will be lifted up on the cross and in resurrection. We will see Jesus in our lives, our very human lives.
The ability to see what is not accessible to ordinary sight is a theme in John. Also, it is not necessary to see in the literal sense in order to believe. This gospel concludes with Jesus' words to Thomas, "Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe" (20:29).  Perhaps the seeking Greeks represent those of us for whom this gospel is written. They do not receive a personal audience with Jesus, but the truth is revealed to them, along with us, in Jesus' speech foretelling the meaning of his death.To see whole-truly-fully I keep going back to Mother Teresa seeing the body of /christ in the desperately poor she attended. It is my fervent belief that all American adults deserve hell to pay for our treatment of the mentally ill for a generation. What if we saw them as extensions of Christ? Would the violence we inflict on each other be so constant? Would the everyday incivilities and put downs be so apparent, especially in churches? That becomes the magnetic attraction of Jesus. From the hear tof our being, we are drawn to Jeus and the paths set before us that lead to him.

Column on March Madness and Ethics


March Madness is my favorite sporting event. I love the David v. Goliath upsets, the tight games, of rooting for a team I am barely aware of. I can recapture in memory the thrill of NC State and Villanova in the eighties over great teams. I lived to see Maryland win a men’s national basketball championship. (Somewhere, I bet I still have the Sports Illustrated cover of their victory). I still miss Gus Johnson calling games, and the mysterious Gus aura that led many of the game she called to be good close ones.

This year, I am watching with a bit of a burden of guilt. That beloved sport is clearly corrupt. It is so corrupt that the FBI has a large scale investigation, with the arrest of coaches in major programs.

The system is apparently corrupt into the high school ranks, as the shoe companies finance all sorts of summer leagues to gain the attention of college recruiters. Apparently this is an open secret, but it was not one of which I was aware in perusing the sports page or listening to sports radio.

I suppose the age of amateurism is over. If the Olympics have gone to a professionalized model, I should not be surprised that the student athlete in the big two major sports will go that way as well. I will miss the connection to a college by way of an athletic scholarship as gateway to college. I don’t know if my loyalty will extend as easily to a minor league system for the pros, under the banner of college sports.

It has long troubled me that coaches at big time athletic state colleges are the highest paid state officials, even if their salaries do not come from taxpayer money but donations. On the other hand, the billions that flow into big time college sports pay for the athletic program scholarships of many sports.

With this sea of corruption engulfing big time college sports, the NCAA seems to focus on trivial violations of amateur roles. This failure will be used in the future as a classic example of goal displacement, where the goal of organizing a level playing field became transmuted into a checklist of minor infractions as doing their job.

Most of the athletes playing college basketball will not go pro. I have no idea what sort of “salary” is proper for them, the ones who will not be approached for endorsement deals. Maybe a professionalized minor league system will lessen the bribes being paid to athletes to join a college squad. I understand that it seems inequitable that the players are getting but a tiny slice of the billions that flows into college football and basketball.

Part of me thinks that those young men should get endorsement deals and have the money placed in a trust fund. Part of me is disappointed that so many small pleasures get linked to big money and commerce. I could watch Division III which is much less corrupt or NAIA, so that the old amateur image still shines more brightly there.

I suppose that a good ethical solution would be to consider a system that seems less likely to be corrupt. As much as it pains me to say, a more professionalized system promises. If we have a draft system into college ranks, like the professional leagues, it could lessen recruitment violations and even lead to a more level paying field for Division One colleges.

I will set this aside and enjoy the thrills of the tournament again this year. It may well be one of the last tournaments that make a bow toward the old vision of amateurism, of playing for the sheer love of the game.

Devotional Pts. for Week of March 18

Sunday-Ps. 51 is the classic psalm of praying with penitence for forgiveness. Few prayers reach its depth of feeling. Many of us lack the sense of guilt assumed by this prayer. Nonetheless, it can be a good guide for self-reflection, especially at this penitential time of year.


Monday-Kythe is a Celtic verb meaning "to appear or be present or close to," as folks may say, "they're kith and kin." Kything prayer means visualizing another as though present, holding them with love. picture the face of a person you want to pray for in the Light: imagine their face with light around it or in it; hold the face in your mind's eye... (perhaps picture yourself in some context with that person)... imagine the person with their countenance uplifted......... Now gently place your arms & hands across your chest in an X shape... "holding the person in your heart" (Philippians 1:7). After a few minutes, exhale... open your hands... release your loved one to the arms of Love, letting go**--the hardest job parents or caregivers have! Ira Kent Groff


Tuesday-M. Basil Pennington-Unfortunately, in seeing ourselves as we truly are, not all that we see is beautiful and attractive. This is undoubtedly part of the reason we flee silence. We do not want to be confronted with our hypocrisy, our phoniness. We see how false and fragile is the false self we project. We have to go through this painful experience to come to our true self. It is a harrowing journey, a death to self – the false self – and no one wants to die. But it is the only path to life, to freedom, to peace, to true love. And it begins with silence. We cannot give ourselves in love if we do not know and possess ourselves. This is the great value of silence. It is the pathway to all we truly want.

2018 St Patrick's column and Celtic Spirituality


Last week, I touched on my maternal side. My father was killed in a seafaring accident before I was three, so I carry his name but not that much about his Irish background. I do know that my grandfather was a relatively late immigrant to the country, in the 1880s. It has been said that to be Irish is to know that the world will break your heart. With that sense of doom, it helps to have a sense of humor, as a tool against the gloom.

It makes some twisted sort of sense for a patron saint of Ireland to have his feast day become an excuse for all sorts of celebration that is often centered on drinking. It is sort of a continuing wake, as March 17 is said to be the date of his death. Given the Irish love of story and legend, a number have touched on Patrick. One that tells a cute story is that Patrick would visit his parents in Britain and preach when he could. He carried a walking stick of ash wood, the wood for some baseball bats. He would plunge his stick into the ground. Once he preached so long that the stick grew roots and turned into an ash tree, so the area became known as aspatria, the ash of Patrick.

While I don’t place much stock in the legends surrounding St Patrick, I do find myself drawn to the movement of what is called Celtic spirituality. It includes a sense of the communion of saints both in the world beyond and this world. It speaks of the soul friend, the anam chara. The sense is that a companion, a guide, perhaps accompanies us in our journey and can often read us well without judgment but acceptance as a friend. John O’Donahue describes it as: “a person to whom you could reveal the hidden intimacies of your life.”

In a sacrament the ordinary becomes a vehicle for the extraordinary, the divine. The physical is the gateway to the spiritual. Celtic spirituality takes this principle and seeks to integrate everyday life with religious significance, so that the most basic of acts, say making coffee, is accompanied by a brief prayer. Esther De Waal puts it well; ‘The Celtic approach to God opens up a world in which nothing is too common to be exalted and nothing is so exalted that it cannot be made common.’ 

This then extends into seeing the natural world as providing insight in God’s creation and a gateway for contemplation.  It fits an ecologically minded age, as it is rooted in the natural world of god’s creation instead of the more airy and abstract world of other spiritual focus. Here’s a prayer attributed to Patrick: “At Tara today in this fateful hour I place all Heaven with its power, and the sun with its brightness, and the snow with its whiteness, and fire with all the strength it hath, and lightning with its rapid wrath, and the winds with their swiftness along their path, and the sea with its deepness, and the rocks with their steepness, and the earth with its starkness– all these I place, by God’s almighty help and grace, between myself and the powers of darkness.”

Finally, they honor time, not as the frenzied rush of filling every minute with activity or worship of the phone screen, but to be enjoyed as part of a natural rhythm. They know of special threshold moments. Basically, time is a crucible where we can offer hospitality to another and that includes making time for God. In the midst of St Patrick celebrations, I hope we can touch on some of these aspects of the faith to honor the legend.

3/11 Sermon Notes Jon 3:14-21, Num 21, Ps. 107, Eph. 2:1-10

March 11-Num. 21-sympathetic magic, controlling an adversary through manipulation of a replication. ...Deliverance comes, not in being removed from the wilderness, but in the very presence of the enemy. The movement from death to life occurs within the very experience of godforsakenness. The death-dealing forces of chaos are nailed to the pole.Terence E. Fretheim  But the serpents do not go away, nor do they stop biting. Instead, God instructs Moses on how to heal the people who are bitten; they are still bitten, but they live. Deliverance does not come in the way that they expect.But then the pole of life is carried to Jerusalem and ensconced in the Temple. ..And so one day the pole must reappear in another godforsaken place, high on a hill, overlooking the holy city. God himself has taken to the pole! Once for all. So that all those who know they are dying in the wilderness can be healed. Look up to him and live... in the wilderness. Howard- Moses’ serpent-on-a-pole shows up again in the Old Testament, at 2 Kings 18:4: “[Hezekiah] removed the high places, broke down the pillars, and cut down the sacred pole. He broke in pieces the bronze serpent that Moses had made, for until those days the people of Israel had made offerings to it; it was called Nehushtan.” and they focused instead on a bronzed, domesticated, manufactured idol that they could see and understand. John 3:14-square one- so loved the world/cosmos-not condemn it- Light.John’s poetic nature, why his is symbolized as the eagle, why called a spiritual gospel sees the image of another poison, the cross as instrument of execution, as a healing image. It takes the poison out of lives. It provides an antidote, an antivenom if you will.Think of the healing symbol of the snake in the pharmacy.(That is a mistake as it confuses this symbol with the healing of Asclepius as well).James Kay speaks of the cross drawing the venom from us, as we lift high the cross, that most downhearted destructive image.In the Buddhist culture, there is a tale about a woman whose child has died. In her agony, she went to the local guru and begged him to give her her child back. “Of course,” he replied – with a challenge. “Just bring me back ONE grain of rice from a household that has escaped the pain of grief.” She ran to the cottage next door, and to the one next to that, and to all the cottages in the village, she learned that life,  is struggle, with suffering its frequent cost, and death its final price.
Eph. 2 WP How do we live in a venom-filled world, with snakes in the grass and often ready to strike? We’re not saved just from our bad individual choices or what we “follow.” God delivers us from an entire mode of existence -- indeed transfers us from one sphere to another -- not just from the inability to make enough of the “right” choices.-according to “the course of this world” (NRSV; ESV); “the ways of this world” (NIV).The word translated “ways” or “course” is aeon. Scholars debate whether it should be best understood as a force in a temporal sense “the age of this world.” Since the early 2nd century B.C.E., people personified Aeon, and it referred to a deity of sorts. Something to which certainly some people could be captive from Paul's perspective..

Week of 3/11 Devotional Pts

Sunday-3/11-Ps.107 (selected verses) V20 says that God sent a word to heal them and saved them from the grave. What words have you found healing? When has a word saved you from the grave?

Thursday-Philip Berrigan-I don’t gather that God wants us to pretend our fear doesn’t exist, to deny it, or eviscerate it. Fear is a reminder that we are creatures – fragile, vulnerable, totally dependent on God. But fear shouldn’t dominate or control or define us.

Column on Pulaski

I’m Polish on my mother’s side. My grandparents were immigrants in the from the Krakow region of then divided Poland, from the Austro-Hungarian controlled area. I was delighted to be reminded when I returned to Illinois, that we celebrate Pulaski Day since the late seventies. I am particularly delighted as Poles were subjected to all sort of prejudice over the years. I think that Pope John Paul II did much to lessen the quick disdain heaped on them.

Casimir (Kazimierz) Pulaski, son of Count Joseph Pulaski, was born in Warsaw in 1745. At the tender age of fifteen, he joined his father and other members of the Polish nobility in armed struggle against both Russian and Prussian armed interference in Polish political life. He fought from 1768-1773, including capture for a time. He went into exile in Germany and then on to France, where he was in desperate financial straits.  In absentia he was sentenced to death for attempted regicide; (actually attempted kidnapping of the king) then he traveled to Paris where he met Benjamin Franklin. Franklin’s vaunted persuasive ability induced him to support the colonies. Pulaski, impressed with the ideals of a new nation, volunteered his services. Franklin wrote to George Washington describing the young Pole as "an officer renowned throughout Europe for the courage and bravery he displayed in defense of his country's freedom." Let’s be clear. This is a member of the nobility going to fight against the forces of the British Empire, not to support the nobility against an upstart revolution.

In 1777, Pulaski arrived in Philadelphia where he met General Washington. Later, at Brandywine, he came to the aid of Washington's forces. His superior skill as a tactician was obvious to the fledgling American army, as he discovered the British flanking maneuver, found an escape route, and covered the retreat. In recognition of his skills, Congress appointed him Brigadier-General in charge of Four Horse Brigades.

Later in 1778, through Washington's intervention, Congress approved the establishment of the Cavalry and put Pulaski at its head. Pulaski, who became known as the "Father of the American Cavalry," demanded much of his men and trained them  cavalry tactics, many of which he used in his fight for freedom in Poland. Due to the awful finances of the infant American government, Pulaski often used his own personal finances, when allocations from Congress were scarce, in order to assure his forces of the finest equipment and personal safety.


Pulaski and his Legion were sent to New Jersey; they then went to the thick of fighting toward the end of the war south to Charleston, South Carolina.  There he harassed the British and his defensive acumen took the British by surprise and at the cost of many casualties. During the Battle of Savannah, 1779 General Pulaski, charged into battle on horseback, and was mortally wounded. Pulaski's enemies were so impressed with his courage, that they spared him the musket and permitted him to be carried from the battlefield. Pulaski died several days later on October 15, 1779, at age 34. The Pulaski Monument, erected in his honor, is located in Monterey Square, Savannah, Georgia, a nice change from the Confederate monuments.

I wish that we did not have to see people rise to their best in warfare. I wish the martial virtues could be demonstrated more regularly in the cause of peace. I wish that even a portion of strategic and tactical intelligence could be used in ways to promote human health and well-being.

March 4 sermon on theology of the cross notes I Cor 1:18-25

I cor. 1:18.Carlson-God has not sought out humanity according to the ways humanity has sought out God. Rather, God has intentionally and decidedly destroyed the ways and means by which humanity decided get to God (1:19, quoting Isaiah 29:14). Through the four rhetorical questions in 1:20, Paul declares that God has rejected and embarrassed the best and brightest of human efforts to understand, explain, and experience God.19. That person does not deserve to be called a theologian who looks upon the invisible things of God as though they were clearly perceptible in those things which have actually happened [Rom. 1:20].22. That wisdom which sees the invisible things of God in works as perceived by man is completely puffed up, blinded, and hardened.

At the heart of his argument is his notion that human beings should not speculate about who God is or how he acts God revealed himself as merciful to humanity in the Incarnation, when he manifested himself in human flesh, and the supreme moment of that revelation was on the cross at Calvary.—the point at which God appeared to be the very contradiction of all that one might reasonably have anticipated him to be.
The "theologians of glory," therefore, are those who build their theology in the light of what they expect God to be like— they make God to look something like themselves.-The theology of glory suggests a way of knowing God. It claims that we can know God through creation as well as through special revelation. But Luther warned that such theology speaks only of the power and glory of God and not of God’s suffering. He suggested that God is “hidden in suffering.” He wrote, “It does one no good to recognize God in his glory and majesty unless one recognizes him in the humility and shame of the cross.”
The theology of glory also suggests a way of life. “Because people do not know the cross and hate it, they necessarily love the opposite, namely, wisdom, glory [and] power,”-“God can be found only in suffering and the cross.”  The cross of Jesus reveals the deep love of God. The cross of Jesus tells us that God suffers...that means not only the cross of Jesus, but the cross of reality; so that the religion thus mythically bolstered becomes a primary factor in the deadening of otherwise sensitive people to the pain of God in the world. I Rightly to grasp the meaning of Christ’s resurrection is to be turned towards the cross, with understanding, not away from it (Hall)
Suddenly that which outwardly seems moronic and weak, the apparent oxymoron of Christ crucified, becomes divine revelation, divine power, and divine salvation (1:18, 21). We do not get to God, or find the key to knowing God through our efforts. Rather, God comes to us and establishes the terms of the encounter of faith in the proclamation of the cross.
John 2:13-overturning as symbolic act deal with righteous anger.They interpret Jesus’ declaration literally, that the temple of which Jesus speaks is the one Jewish temple in which they are standing. We find out, . What would Jesus seek to clear from us? This act will reverberate and will become part of his death knell. Our current mania for expressing anger and having it percolate so that it can be constantly released is one of the more unhealthy  mantras of the baby boom generation.It is not righteous anger but the petulance of a child’s frustration in not getting their way. That Is too trivial a matter for the cross, but an attitude that is properly dead and buried.

Sunday-Ps.19 is intriguing with its linkage of creation with god’s “law” god’s orderly view of an often unruly creation. Science portrays both aspects in its awe-inspiring discoveries in our lifetime. What element of science gives you insight into the ways of god’s creation?

Wednesday-Christian Wiman-Silence is the language of faith. Action – be it church or charity, politics or poetry – is the translation. As with any translation, action is a mere echo of its original, inevitably faded and distorted, especially as it moves farther from its source. ..it is also true that without these constant translations into action, that original, sustaining silence begins to be less powerful, and then less accessible, and then finally impossible.

Thursday-I am very glad that precisely in this hour of crisis many who were asleep have woken up and are at least asking where the truth is to be found. Look for it! Saint Paul shows us the way: it is found with prayer, reflection, and esteem for what is good. These are wonderful criteria. Wherever there is something noble, something good, something just, there we find God.
